A Letter from the Department Chair
Welcome from the Chair,
Clemson University’s Food Science and Human Nutrition Department (FSHN) is clearly a leader in the nation. What an exciting time to be a professional in the food and human nutrition industry. In today’s society, many people are conscious of possible food-borne illnesses, obesity, and lack of exercise, and they are determined to not let these dangers continue to slowly kill our nation. Food safety and security includes our nation’s food supply. Clemson University’s Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition faculty and students are proactively addressing these concerns in public schools, churches, retail stores, and food processing plants, to name a few. Many of our Creative Inquiry team topics focus directly on these and many other topics of national interest (see Creative Inquiry page for specific topics).
We offer a Food Science degree with concentrations in Food Science and Technology and in Nutrition and Dietetics. The Food Science and Technology Concentration satisfies all the accreditation standards and expected learning outcomes for the Institute of Food Technologists, and for the Research Chefs Association. There are only a few universities in the country with a program approved by both professional organizations. The Nutrition and Dietetics Concentration is currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association. Because of these real-world experiences and our umbrella of accreditations, our graduates with bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees are aggressively sought after by companies in the food and health industry, which is the largest business sector in the nation.
My door is always open so please stop by anytime for a visit. If on campus, make sure you stop by the FSHN 55 Exchange in the Hendrix Center. The ’55 Exchange is a student-run business, thanks to a generous gift from the Class of ’55 that produces the best ice cream in Clemson.
Go Tigers!
Anthony L. Pometto III, Ph.D.
