Abstract
The objective of our project was to provide individuals in the community with the resources needed to lead healthier lifestyles using Health Fairs. The populations targeted were an underserved at-risk population in Anderson, S.C. and a textile worksite in Anderson, SC whose population consists primarily of individuals with a minimum high school education. Both Health Fairs were promoted to more than 1000 individuals per site. Heights, weights and waist circumferences were taken at both sites. Measurements were used to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine persons at-risk for obesity. BMI charts were given to participants to help them track BMI changes at home. Nutrition education activities included a low-calorie heart healthy brunch, and a demonstration of healthy food choices using a 3-D MyPyramid with food models showing appropriate portion sizes. Educational materials developed by CI students were provided to participants to encourage healthier nutritional and lifestyle choices.
