Graduate Programs

The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition is one of only a few academic programs in the US approved by both the Institute of Food Technologists and the American Dietetic Association and the only Food Science program in South Carolina. The department offers a MS in Food, Nutrition, and Culinary Sciences and PhD in Food Technology. The MS degree offerings are in the specific fields of Human Nutrition, Food Microbiology, Food Chemistry, Food Engineering, Food Safety, and other Food Science related fields. Entering students should have an adequate background in mathematics, biochemistry, organic chemistry, human nutrition, food chemistry, food microbiology. Students not meeting the minimum background requirements may in some cases be admitted to the program on a probationary level and complete deficiencies within the first year.

Each student is strongly encouraged to select a major faculty advisor before starting a graduate degree.

The program offers a MS research thesis option. The Food Technology doctoral program is offered by selected faculty from the departments of Food Science and Human Nutrition, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Animal and Veterinary Sciences, Horticulture, Microbiology and Molecular Medicine, and Packaging Science.
