  • Our newest faculty members:

    • Dr. Angela M. Fraser, Associate Professor / Food Safety Specialist, joined Clemson from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, where she served as an Associate Professor, (December 2007);
    • Dr. Julie K. Northcutt, Associate Professor / Poultry Processing & Food Safety, joined Clemson from USDA Agricultural Research Service, Athens, GA where she served as a project leader, (January 2008);
    • Dr. Anthony L. Pometto III, Professor and Chair / Industrial Microbiologist, joined Clemson from Iowa State University, Ames, IA, where he served as professor and associate director of the Institute for Food Safety and Security.

  • Drs. W. Scott Whiteside and John U. McGregor manage the new Cryovac Pilot Plant Retort Processing Laboratory in Newman Hall which opened for business October 2008.  It is jointly managed by FSHN and Packaging Science Departments.  Equipment includes: retort (ridged or flexible containers), continuous inline filler/sealer, kettles, choppers, vacuum sealer, refrigerated/freezer storage, and more. All equipment is moveable except two retorts for easy of matching almost any processing flow.
  • The FSHN Culinary Lab began full operation Fall Semester 2008.  Thanks to Drs. Aubrey D. Coffee, Margaret D. Condrasky and John U. McGregor. This world class facility renovation was supported by Mama Mary’s (Greenville, SC) and Electrolux, Inc. (Anderson, SC).
  • New workshops/outreach offered this year:

    • Drs. Felix H. Barron and Angela M. Fraser conducted Spanish-language food safety training in Greenville, SC.
    • Dr. Julie K. Northcutt offered a seafood HACCP workshop, Summer 2009.
    • Dr. Felix H. Barron offered his Better Processing Control School in Mexico and Spain, Summer 2009.
    • Marge Condrasky coordinated the delivery of the Cooking with a Chef program for School Food Service Managers SIFT training in four SC locations (160 participants). Summer 2009
  • Professional Service Highlights:

    • Dr. Anthony L. Pometto III, member of the FDA National Center for Toxicological Research Science Advisory Board for a five year term (began May 2004)
