Food Science and Technology

If you are looking to work in a high-tech scientific field with great opportunities for advancement then food science and technology may be the career for you!  Food scientists and technologists work to help meet consumer demand for food products that are safe, healthy, convenient, and flavorful.

Food scientists use their creative knowledge of chemistry, microbiology, engineering and other sciences to develop new or better ways of preserving, processing, packaging, storing, and delivering foods. Some food scientists engage in new product development, designing new foods and discovering new food sources.

They search for ways to improve the nutritional benefits of existing foods and work to replace undesirable additives. They also develop new and more efficient ways to process, preserve, package, or store food according to industry and government regulations. Others enforce government regulations, inspecting food processing areas and ensuring that sanitation, safety, quality, and environmental standards are met.

Food industry professionals typically work in private industry, education, or for government agencies.  This is a rapidly growing field and the opportunities are endless.  How far you go is up to you!
