Research Activities
Dr. Abbott is currently working on research problems in molecular biology and molecular genetics in both plants and animal systems. Specific projects involve: 1) study of genes important to growth and development in higher plants; 2) molecular mapping and study of genes important to pathogen resistance in trees; 3) Structural and functional genomics of deciduous trees; 4) studies on fatty acid synthesis genes in higher plants, particularly peanut; and 5) production of synthetic genes for biomimetic manufacturing of novel biobased materials. Current methodologies employed include recombinant DNA techniques: protein and nucleic acid gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning and DNA sequencing, molecular marker systems and EST analysis and databasing.
