Albert G. Abbott, the Robert and Lois Coker Trustees Chair in Molecular Genetics and a professor in the genetics and biochemistry department, receives the Godley-Snell Award for Excellence in Agricultural Research from Susan Barefoot, associate dean and director of the Experiment Station.

Stephen J. Klaine, professor of Biological Sciences and interim director of Clemson’s Institute of Environmental Toxicology received the Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement in Research, given annually by the Clemson Alumni Association to a faculty member who demonstrates outstanding ability and commitment to research. The award was presented by Wil Brasington, senior director of alumni relations.

Clemson University dedicates Harris A. Smith building, home to Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics
On March 31, Clemson dedicated the Harris A. Smith building, home to the Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics. President and Mrs. Barker, Provost Dori Helms, Harris A. Smith, Sonoco Products Co Representatives, Dean Alan Sams of the College of Agriculture, Forestry & Life Sciences, Dean Claude Lily of the College of Business & Behavioral Science, and several hundred industry representatives, faculty members and students attended the event.
Susan Chapman, PhD, receives $1 million NIH grant to research hearing defects
According to Dr. Chapman, a neuroscientist and developmental biologist in the Department of Biological Sciences, about 3 in 1,000 babies are born with hearing impairment, making it the most common birth defect. Angela Fraser, PhD, awarded $577,000 by USDA to study food safety in child care centers
The US Centers for Disease Control estimate that as many as 5,000 deaths and 76 million illnesses each your are directly linked to food-borne pathogens. Infants and children 5 years old and younger are at greater risk of contracting a severe food-borne illness than other population groups, according to Dr. Fraser. In the US, 63% of children under 5 are reported to be in some type on child care arrangement. In an effort to reduce the risk for these children, Dr. Fraser who is a food safety specialist and associate professor in the Department of Food Samety and Human Nutrition, will be collaborating with Sheryl Cates of the Research Triangle Institute in Durham, NC, and Lee-ANN Jaykus of NC State University in Raleigh. DOE and Chevron award $800,000 to John Rodgers and Jim Castle to research sustainable and low cost methods of removing oil, grease, chemicals and salts from contaminated water
Two Clemson University scientists were awarded more than $800,000 to find economical and environmentally sensible ways to treat what oilmen call “produced or co-produced water”: billions of gallons of contaminated water that come out of the ground during oil and natural gas production. Their work may help the nation achieve energy self-sufficiency and environmental sustainability. Dr. Castle, a professor in the Department of Environmental Enginering and Earth Sciences, and Dr. Rodgers of the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, are developing constructed wetland systems to treat the contaminated water for reuse. The research funding includes $689,500 from the U.S. Department of Energy and $120,000 from Chevron of Houston, Texas. Read the full story...

Two students from Clemson University's department of biological sciences have been selected to conduct 10-week research experiments under the supervision of Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Research Scholars. Clemson grads, family farmers from Ridge Spring, win national environment award
The Yon family, owners of Yon Family Farms in Ridge Spring, has received the National Environmental Stewardship Award for their commitment to conserving natural resources. Kevin and Lydia Yon, both Clemson University graduates, and their three children, Sally, Drake and Corbin, received the award Jan. 29 at the 2009 Cattle Industry Annual Convention in Phoenix. Katherine Cason, PhD, wins national award from the American Dietetic Association Foundation
Dr. Cason, professor in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, won the award for her leadership in innovative and unique programs for the prevention of disease and promotion of health in the state, including the Lucy’s Tasty Treasures program, her nutrition information and resource center Web site and for nutrition, diet and health podcasts in both English and Spanish. She serves as leader for nutrition, diet and health programs as well as coordinator of the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, a position she has held for more than 17 years. She will attend the awards banquet in October in Denver.
Keith Murphy, Chair of the Department of Genetics and Biochemistry appointed acting director of Clemson University Genomics Institute (CUGI)
Dr. Murphy sees CUGI as a significant resource in the rapidly evolving field of genomics-oriented research. CUGI is involved in the development and distribution of genomic tools and services for the life science community. It also performs research that focuses on the discovery and analysis of genes: lengths of DNA that provide the building instructions for proteins in microbes, plants, animals and humans. Joseph Drew Lanham, a professor in the Clemson University forestry and natural resources department, is the recipient of a new national fellowship designed to advance the work of individuals with outstanding potential to help shape a brighter environmental future.
