Return of Grant-derived Tuition Incentive Funds to Departments Policy

Section:  College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences

Subject:  Return of Grant-derived Tuition Incentive Funds to Departments

Effective:  July 1, 2009

Statement:

Grant-derived tuition incentive fund returns are based on prior fiscal year accumulation for all funded project grants.

Purpose:

A policy is needed to provide financial incentives that encourage faculty to seek tuition funding on grants that will advance their research endeavors.

Discussion:

The College should develop an official policy of tuition incentive fund returns to the College Dean, Department, and the Principal Investigator.

Policy:

The grant-derived tuition incentive return distribution policy for the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences will follow that of Indirect Cost Incentive returns.  Of the generated funds, 25% will be returned to the College Dean.  Of the remainder, 25% will be returned to the Department and 50% to the Principal Investigator.  Tuition incentive returns to the Department and Principal Investigator are to be used solely for graduate student compensation.

Fund balances at the end of the fiscal year in the tuition incentive accounts will normally be carried over into the next fiscal year.  However, there may be deferrals of tuition incentive return carry over in times of budget crisis.
