CAFLS Research Rocks 2009

In spite of an economic downturn last year, research awards and proposal submissions in the College of Agriculture, Forestry & Life Sciences rose dramatically for FY 2008-2009, and have soared during the first quarter of FY 2010. For the first quarter of FY 2010 research awards totaled $7,145,699, up 95% compared to the same period last year and proposal submissions totaling $51,005,983 were up 151% from the first quarter of FY 2008-2009. Total research awards for FY 2008-2009 were $14,924,713, up 15% from 2007-2008 and proposal submissions were up 10% from the previous fiscal year.

To celebrate the CAFLS research success, on November 19 the “Research rocks” celebration was held at the Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics in the new Harris A. Smith Building on campus. All CAFLS faculty and staff were invited. See the pictures below for many of those who attended.

As a reminder that the motivation to conduct research goes beyond dollar amounts and recognition, Alfred “Hap” Wheeler marked the occasion with poetry:

Quest

My friend what is your labor here,
So all consuming, without peer?

Labor?  No, ‘tis more for pleasure,
In Nature’s cache: Explore! Measure!

Why would you do so strange a thing?
Do you not, as the poet sings,
So “murder to dissect,” and rend
The joys that she is wont to lend?
And by these prideful goals won’t hence
We lose the Garden’s innocence?

Liberated is more my take,
To stand apart for free will’s sake.
There is no rest for us, you see;
It is innate—our legacy—
That we seek, and with seeking flow
The secrets only she would know.
And this bold quest may find us where,
Revealing her as dear and fair,
Our destiny we will embrace,
As stewards of our Lady’s grace.
