Counselors Needed For The Summer Of 2015!

The Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI) is a program coordinated by the SC Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) for rising high school seniors in public and private schools in South Carolina. The goal of SPRI is to motivate bright, academically talented students to pursue careers in science, mathematics, or technology.

During the summer of 2015, Clemson University will host approximately 35 resident and 5 commuting student research interns in this program from June 7-July 17. The student research interns work with Clemson faculty in their campus laboratories for six weeks, approximately 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday.

Counselors will be hired (tentatively two male, two female). Each counselor will be housed in a dorm on the same floor as the SPRI students (day counselors may opt out of housing). Counselors will be responsible for the safety of the students in their charge and  remain with the students after 5 PM each day, seven days a week and all day on weekends.

Current or former Clemson University Resident Assistants are encouraged to apply.

Job Description

Resident Dorm Counselors...

  • will plan and make logistical preparations the week before interns arrive, manage all aspects of intern check-in on June 7,
    assist with campus orientation (June 8), and manage intern check-out on July 17 & 18
  • counselors are required to live in the dorm and remain with the student safter 5PM each day, seven days a week and all day on weekends
  • are responsible for the safety of the students and must know where they are at all times
  • must be willing to work with the interns, plan activities, maintain a minimal activity budget, possess basic counseling skills, confront problems and inform the dorm supervisor and SPRI Director of incidents and make appropriate referrals when necessary
  • must lead activities and accompany groups of students to downtown shops, restaurants, or to the movie theater during the evening hours and on weekends - counselors will be given a small budget and will be responsible for planning social activities and excursions
  • are free to take summer school courses or hold other non-university jobs as long as those hours do not interfere with counselor obligations and they are accessible via phone  (in case of emergencies).

Job Qualifications

In order to be considered for a dorm counselor position, you must:

  • be 18 years of age
  • be classified as a sophomore or above at the time of assuming the counselor position
  • have obtained a cumulative GPR of at least 2.00
  • hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to drive a mini-van if necessary
  • Have lived in university housing for at least one semester or
  • Have proven experience supervising HS students

Pay and Benefits

Counselors will be paid $350 a week. A university meal plan and dorm room will be provided.

Term of Employment

Approximately June 1 - July 18. Some flexibility in start date is possible.
