DNA Fingerprinting

Description of the Activity

This experiment examines DNA polymorphisms that are the basis of forensic DNA fingerprinting and genetic diagnosis. Students will use restriction digested, lambda phage DNA to simulate an RFLP DNA fingerprint, and they will then use the results of their electrophoresis to solve a mock forensic investigation.

  Objectives

Identify the structure and function of DNA

Define genetic polymorphism and comprehend how this is exploited for forensic applications

Explain the activity of restriction endonucleases

Understand the physics of gel electrophoresis

Learn techniques for collecting, transferring and loading micro amounts of liquid materials
