Saturday, April 18th: GARDEN FEST: BUILDING COMMUNITY, GROWING VEGETABLES Interesting in growing your own vegetables? Learning how to compost? Finding out where to find locally-grown food? Learning how to transplant seedlings? Or, interested in swapping your gas mower for an electric one? Come learn from a variety of community organizations, CU experts, and local gardeners in this Garden Earth Day event. Time: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Free event. Located at the Discovery Center parking area in the SC Botanical Garden off Perimeter Rd. at Clemson University.
Wednesday, May 20 thru Thursday, May 21: The Clemson University Sustainable Agriculture Program will offer this comprehensive, 2-day training on Good Agricultural Practices for Fresh Produce Safety as part of its SC SARE-sponsored training and education series. This comprehensive training (see description below and attached agenda) is being organized to provide South Carolina vegetable and fruit growers with critical information for on-farm implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) that are required for GAP certification. Participants completing the 2-day course will become familiar with procedures for development of on-farm food safety plans and with requirements for GAP certification.
Registration for the course is $50 per person that will include a GAPS training manual and lunch both days.

Thursday, September 24: Ecologically Based Weed Management for Sustainable/Organic Vegetable Production:A Course for Farmers and Extension Agents/ Presented by Dr. Mark Schonbeck; 8:30 AM till 4:30 PM /Madren Conference Center Auditorium, Clemson University, Clemson, SC/ This full day course will cover the key principles and concepts that can be used to effectively manage weeds in small-scale, diversified vegetable production without the use of herbicides. The weed management approach that will be presented is based on preventive cultural practices such as cover cropping, rotation of crops and tillage practices, and "feeding the crop but not the weeds," supplemented with timely cultivation and other weed control tactics. Examples of innovative and successful strategies and tactics from working farms will be used to illustrate principles. The morning session will be spent in the classroom followed by lunch (provided). The afternoon session will be spent in the field at the Clemson Student Organic Farm where the group will see examples of real-life weed problems followed by open discussion on best strategies for management.
Registration: Registration for the course is $25 which includes lunch (fee waived for Clemson and SCSU Extension agents). Registration deadline is September 14.
