How to Reduce In-Home and On-Farm Hazardous Waste Storage
- Reduce
the amount of potentially hazardous chemicals you store by buying only
the amount you need at the time. Additional product should be purchased
only when needed.
- Choose
to use least toxic products, so that if you must store them, they have
the least potential to cause harm to people or the environment.
- If you must store chemical products, store only small amounts of them and store them in their original containers.
- Before using any chemical product, always read the label and use the product according to label directions.
- If a chemical requires mixing, be careful to mix only the amount you need to complete the job at hand.
- Triple
rinse or pressure rinse empty containers immediately after use. Use the
rinse water on a labeled site, and dispose of the containers according
to label instructions.
- Calibrate pesticide application equipment before beginning and re-check it before finishing a job.
- Try
to reduce the number of empty pesticide containers that must be
disposed of by buying products in mini-bulk or returnable containers.
