The S.C. Crop Improvement Association Review Board recently approved the release of eight new cotton varieties. The varieties, which improve fiber quality, were joint releases between the USDA Agriculture Research Service, Clemson and Cotton Incorporated. Fiber quality determines value, so improvements will increase grower revenue.
South Carolina growers harvested 250,000 acres of cotton in 2013 amounting to some 360,000 480LB bales.
Clemson conducts several cotton variety trials. 2012 yield and fiber data is available here.
