wes.jpg4-H Forestry Judging develops an appreciation for the importance of conserving forestland as a source of products, benefits, and services necessary for quality living. 4-H foresters learn citizenship and leadership skills as well as practical forest management skills through participation in the 4-H Forestry Invitational. By learning these skills, young people will be better prepared to own forestland or deal with environmental issues in the future.

Forestry skills and knowledge events include:

  • Tree Identification
  • Tree Measurement
  • Forest Evaluation
  • Compass Orienteering
  • Topographical Map Use
  • Forest Insect and Disease Identification
  • Forestry Bowl
  • Forestry Written Exam

4-H Forestry Clinic - March 2016
Webb Wildlife Center, Garnett, SC

Youth ages 14-18 interested in learning forestry can attend this weekend training. The clinic will be held at SCDNR Webb Wildlife Center in Garnett, SC. After a weekend of intense training, four youth and an alternate will be selected to represent South Carolina at the National 4-H Forestry Invitational in July in West Virginia. Cost for the clinic is $100. Limit 20 participants. Once selected for the team, members will practice throughout the year to prepare for the National Contest.

Space is limited to the first 20 participants with paid registration. Bamberg and Barnwell County participants, please send copy of registration form to Shannon Herndon, PO Box 299, Bamberg, SC 29003 or fax 803-245-2170 or email to sbhrndn@clemson.edu. All other counties register directly with Jamie Pohlman jaime@clemson.edu or 864-852-2112 ext 113 in McCormick County.  Registration and permission forms are due February. Late registrations must include $15 late fee.

4-H Forestry Invitational - July 26-30, 2015
Weston, West Virginia

Since 1980, teams of 4-H foresters from across the nation have come to Jackson's Mill State 4-H Conference Center at Weston, WV, the first and oldest 4-H camp in the United States, to meet, compete, and have fun.
