The South Carolina 4-H Horse Delegation performed with excellence at this year’s Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championship Event held in Tunica, MS from July 27 to July 31, 2011. Eighteen SC youth competed in the educational contests and 24 youth rode their horses in this year’s event.
Cleo Lampert won 6th in Individual Demonstration and Ashley McCarter won 8th in Public Speaking.
The Hippology team consisting of Madison Starnes, Shealy Melton, Kelly McNair and Morgan Freeman were 5th in the Team Problem Phase, 9th in the Stations ID Phase, 6th in the Judging Phase, and 11th in the Written Exam Phase (just out of the ribbons); This team finished 9th overall out of 16 teams total. With 67 individuals competing, team member Madison Starnes was 24th high individual overall, with a 15th place finish in the Stations Phase, and 16th in the Judging Phase. Team member Shealy Melton was 15th high individual in the Judging Phase.
The Hippology team consisting of Ariel Bussinah, Ciara Wertz, Rachel Williams and Jillian Myers were 9th in the Written Exam Phase, 8th in Team Problem Phase, 11th high team overall (narrowly missing out of a top ten ribbon).
The Horse Bowl teams were equally successful. The team consisting of Hannah Steele, Rachel Williams, Dia Dodson and Amber Melton were 5th High Team Overall. The team consisting of Casey Miller, Ariel Bussinah, Jessica Privett and Shealy Melton were 7th High Team Overall. Rachel Williams was 5th High Individual and Jessica Privett was 8th High Individual out of 62 individual competitors. Hannah Steele barely missed a ribbon and finished 13th overall.
The Horse Judging Teams continued the wins, competing against 14 other teams. SC team members Casey Miller, Hannah Byerly, Ashtyn Kinney, and Hailey Owens won 9th high team in Halter division, 6th high team in Performance division, and 6th high team overall. SC team members Madison Starnes, Ciara Wertz, Kitty McClellion, and Forrest Lambert won 10th high team in Halter division, 9th high team in Performance division and 8th high team overall.
In the Horse Show, 27 horse/rider combinations represented South Carolina. Cody McMillion won 6th in Stock Type Mares out of 22 entries. Sarah Joy Babcock tied for 14th in Hunter Showmanship with 64 horses to show and Lauren Jay tied for 16th. Narrowly missing a ribbon in Trail was Shana Byerly who finished 12th out of 111. Hannah Byerly and Courtney Barnett both made the semi finals of Western Pleasure with 91 horses in the class. Courtney Barnett and Jessica Privett were both finalists in Western Horsemanship and Jessica went on to win 7th in the Horsemanship out of 110 riders; Courtney was 12th just out of the ribbons. Shana Byerly won 4th and Cody McMillion won 6th in Reining with 39 horses in the class; Elliott Kissam tied for 11th missing out on the top ten. Jessica Privett was 12th in Western Riding, finishing just out of the ribbons with 32 horses in the class. Lucy Wetzel and Casey Miller both
made it to the finals of Pole Bending; Lucy finished 13th with 75 horses in the class. Janelle Petruska and Anne Mason made it to the semi finals of Hunter Under Saddle. Anne went on to ride in the finals and won 8th place out of 130 horses in Hunter Under Saddle. Anne Mason and Lauren Jay made it to the semi finals of the Hunt Seat Equitation; Lauren finished 12th just out of the ribbons with 164 horses shown. Anne Mason won 6th in the Horse Working Hunter out of 52 horses. Lauren Jay finished 15th in Equitation Over Fences, Anne Mason finished 16th and Savannah Warren tied for 17th in the same class. Janelle Petruska won 2nd in Open Jumping out of 22 (she was the first to go and set the pace for the jump off). Finally, Janelle Petruska was 6th and Kelly McNair was 7th in Training Level Test 3. Sarah Joy Babcock was edged out of a ribbon by 0.4% and finished 11th in Training Level Test 3. This represents a total of 9 ribbons in the horse show – a great show for South Carolina!
