Livestock Projects and Activities

Learn about animal care, handling, and showing while you have fun raising your 4-H project animal.

Barrow - June 1 signup deadline
Youth (ages 5-19) enrolled in the Performance Tested Barrow Project purchase a feeder pig weighing 50-70 pounds then raise and exhibit their animal for 4-5 months. At the end of the project, the animals are sold as market animals weighing 220-260 pounds.
Project at a glance:
        1) Join 4-H (membership form linked above) - $10
        2) Register for project by June 1
        3) Purchase a barrow for the market price ($75-$80)
        4) Weigh-in first week of July (date, location TBA)
        5) Attend showing clinic in August (date, location, TBA)
        5) Show at Orangeburg County Fair Junior Barrow Show
        6) Show at State Fair Performance Tested Barrow Show
        7) Sell at market of your choice or harvest on your own

Dairy Heifer - February 27 signup deadline
Any 4-H or FFA member, ages 9-17, can raise and show a registered dairy heifer for 18 months. The project was begun in 1974 with the purpose of giving youth with non-dairy backrounds the opportunity to experience the industry.  At the conclusion of the project, all heifers are sold at the South Carolina Dairy Bred Heifer Sale before they begin milking. 

Goat - May 1 signup deadline
Youth, ages 5-18, purchase a project goat, raise, show, and keep records on their animal for 4-5 months.  At the end of the project, goats are sold and youth receive the money.  The Meat Goat Project at a glance:
       1) Join 4-H (membership form linked above) - $10
       2) Register for project by May 1 - $125
       3) Attend the Goat Project Kick-off on June 13 at the Newberry County Fairgrounds
       4) Attend showing clinic in August.
       5) Participate, show, and sell at the State Meat Goat Project Show in the Fall.

Market Steer

Poultry - June 1 sign-up deadline
Youth, ages 5-19, will provide care and protection for their flock and utilize it to participate in this project.  Keep records, learn more about poultry, and choose one chicken to show at the Savannah Valley Regional Poultry Show at the Orangeburg County Fair.  Project at a glance:
1) Join 4-H (membership form linked above) - $10
2) Register for the project by June 1 - $10
3) Attend project workshop to learn about showing and project books (July)
4) Attend a showmanship clinic/blood-testing (August)
5) Show at the Orangeburg County Fair - October 10

Rabbit - May 1 sign-up deadline
Project at a glance:
         1) Join 4-H (membership form linked above) - $10
         2) Register for project by May 1.
         3) Purchase a rabbit for the market price ($10-$15)
         4) Attend showing clinic in August (date, time, location TBA).
