The Junior Naturalist Program is a series of half day Saturday programs covering a wide variety of topics within our natural world. The topics covered correspond with the science curriculums for grades 3-6. Youth will learn about and gain experiences in topics ranging from birds and insects to weather.
Five of the ten program series will be offered each year. Two programs will be offered every fall and every spring and 1 program will be offered each winter. Complete 5 of the 10 offered Junior Programs, within a 2 year time period and earn the status of Junior Naturalist. Receive a t-shirt and naturalist tool upon earning the status!
This program series is for youth ages 8-13. Each program costs $10.00 which includes a morning snack, notebook and materials for the program.
Youth should dress in sturdy shoes for each program they are attending as that hiking will be a small part of most programs.
Programs for Year I included Junior Ornithology, Junior Dendrology, Junior Geology, Junior Herpetology and Junior Wildlife Biology.
There has now been 5 Culinary Cooking Clovers Events in the past couple of years (2 camps and 3 day programs) and there is a camp scheduled for July 21-23, 2010. During the first camp youth learned basic cooking skills such as how to break down a chicken, how to make stock and how to make a roux. During the recent spring class youth learned how to make cinnamon rolls and truffles.
The bicycle rodeo was held April 7th at Liberty Elementary School. Kids introduced to bicycle safety by Liberty Bicycle Policeman, Officer Constance. They then showed off their skills on the obstacle course and learned additional skills from volunteers.
On May 2nd, 70 youth from around the Upstate Region gathered at Southland Ranch, owned by Jimmy and Susan Hutton, to learn about showing livestock. The event was sponsored by AgSouth of Anderson and was attended by the Pickens Cattlemen's Assocation. There were several animals at the event that youth learned about and were given the opportunity to handle. Dr. Mickey Hall, fromClemson University, brought chickens. Terry Wyatt provided sheep. Ms. Pinson and the 4-H Goat Club from Laruens County, provided goats and Jimmy, Tommy, Susan and Teresa Hutton provided cattle. Thank you all who helped out with this event it was a wonderful day!
