Brown Patch

brown patchThis is a fungal disease that infects almost all cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Symptoms include roughly circular patches of brown grass which may join together to cover large areas. Often the center of the patch will recover, resulting in a "doughnut" pattern. Generally, this fungus feeds on dead organic matter in the soil, but will attack grass when the right environmental conditions arise. The fungus is most severe under hot, humid conditions.

Control: Avoid applying heavy amounts of nitrogen; maintain adequate levels of phosphorus and potassium by periodic soil testing; reduce thatch buildup and remove thatch layers greater than one-half inch in depth; avoid evening watering; and increase air movement. Contact your County Extension Agent or Master Gardener for recommended fungicides.
