Dollar Spot

dollar spotDollar spot is caused by a fungus that attacks the leaf blades. Symptoms include small circular areas of straw-colored grass which range from one to six inches across. Examine individual leaves to see straw-colored lesions with reddish-brown borders. Sometimes the lesions will extend across the blade while the leaf tip remains green. Early in the morning you may be able to spot a spider web-like growth over the infected lawn area. Dollar spot is more common during the spring and fall months.

Control: Low nitrogen levels favor disease development; maintain adequate levels of phosphorus and potassium by periodic soil testing; avoid evening watering; and increase air circulation. Fungicides are effective. Contact your County Extension Agent or Master Gardener for recommended fungicides.
