Spring Dead Spot

spring dead spotThis fungal disease primarily attacks bermudagrass lawns. Look for dead circular patches of grass in the spring as the bermudagrass comes out of dormancy. Patches may be two or three feet across. These areas commonly look like "doughnuts," where healthy grass grows in the center of dead areas.

Control: Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer applications in late summer and fall. Aerify or dethatch lawns with thatch layers greater than one-half inch in thickness. Systemic fungicides have demonstrated best control when applied in the fall.
