Aphids
Aphids are soft-bodied insects with piercing-sucking mouthparts that feed on the tender new growth of many plants. Heavy infestations result in sticky leaves covered with a thin black film of sooty mold, a fungus which feeds on the honeydew excreted by the aphids. There are many different species of wide-ranging colors. Most species are host- specific. Many aphids can transmit viral diseases to susceptible plants.
Control: Allow beneficial insects such as lady beetles to reduce aphid numbers. Aphids can sometimes be washed from plants with a strong stream of water. Many insecticides are available.
