Pickleworm
This insect becomes a problem about mid-June to early June when the moths emigrate northward from their overwintering sites in Florida. They mostly attack cantaloupe, cucumber and squash. The young larvae usually feed on leaves and flowers. The older larvae bore into the sides of the fruit and continue to feed. They leave the fruit and roll themselves in a leaf to pupate. The entire life cycle is about 22 to 28 days with three generations produced per year.
Control: Plant early to allow for some harvest before the insects arrive. Grow resistant varieties.
