Florida Betony

Florida BetonyThis perennial weed is most active during the cooler months of the spring and fall. You can identify it by its square stems, opposite leaves, and white, segmented tubers. Florida betony (Stachys floridana) reproduces primarily from tubers. It is often called "rattlesnake weed" because the tubers look like a rattlesnake's tail. Other local common names are wild artichoke, Indian artichoke, and skullcap.

Control: Handpull when the soil is moist enough to remove all plant parts, especially the tubers. Herbicides are available depending on the crop grown.
