Figure 1.  This installation is the "normal" ram system where the inlet pipe is less than the maximum length allowed.  No stand pipe or open tank is required.

This installation is one option used where the inlet pipe is longer than the maximum length allowed.  The open water tank is required to allow dissipation of the water hammer shock wave.
