Is your thumb green? Do you have a thirst for knowledge? Can you commit to putting your knowledge and skills to work through volunteer service? If you answered yes, then the South Carolina Master Gardener program may be for you! The next Tri-County Master Gardener Training Course (Berkeley, Charleston & Dorchester counties) will begin September 27, 2012. The TCMG training course meets on Thursdays. The TCMG training course is a 12 week course that consists of full and half day classes. The course combines in person learning, online classroom instruction and hands-on projects that help students make real world connections from classroom to garden. Topics covered include soil and nutrient mangement, interpreting soil analyses, botany, plant physiology, entomology, plant pathology, sustainable landscaping and much more! Graduates are expected to share their knowledge through a variety of volunteer opportunties which include staffing the Master Gardener offices in the Tri-County Extension offices. Through an internship program, these new volunteers answer client gardening questions and fulfill the mission of the Master Gardener program which is to "facilitate the work of the local Urban Horticulture Extension Agent by delivering research-based information to citizens of the state." After becoming a Certified Master Gardener, Tri-County MGs may become members of the Tri-County Master Gardener Association (TCMGA). The TCMGA is a 501c3 organization that helps in fulfilling the mission of the Master Gardener program and expands that mission by creating learning opportunities wherever gardeners gather in our community.
