Corn is one of the main row crops in the United States. According to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, corn acreage increased from 80.2 to 93.6 million acres and total production increased from 9.76 billion bushels to 13.1 billion bushels in the U.S. from 1998 to 2007. In 2009, there were 86.5 million acres planted with a total production of 13.2 billion bushels.
The acreage of planted corn increased in South Carolina from 350,000 acres to 400,000 acres from 1998 to 2007. In 2008 and 2009, about 355,000 and 335,000 acres of corn were planted in South Carolina, respectively.
The Orangeburg, Clarendon, Sumter, Lee, Williamsburg, Horry, Darlington, and Florence Counties accounted for the highest acreage of planted corn in the State in 2009 (Table 1). The highest estimated average yields were obtained from Georgetown, Sumter, Spartanburg, and Richland Counties (135, 131, 126, and 125 Bu/acre, respectively).
The average yield for the State was 110 Bu/acre in 2006, 100 Bu/acre in 2007, 65 Bu/acre in 2008, and 111 Bu/acre in 2009.
