Situation

Extension has fewer full time staff in the counties, consequently, we have reduced personal contact with our audiences. Regular newscolumns afford an opportunity to keep the public engaged with Extension as a source of educational information. The Index Journal, Greenwood's daily paper, is most cooperative in using newscolumn materials that Extension provides on foods topics. Writing these columns is an effective way to get Extension information out to the public. The articles generate positive feedback from the public.

Response

Two Family and Consumer Sciences agents in this region of the state alternate weeks sending articles to the Index. Circulation is 15,000 families Monday - Saturday, and 15,600 families on Sunday. We also send our columns to the Edgefield Advertiser for use on a space available basis. Columns are used with an Extension heading and a picture of the agent, and may include special event announcements along with foods topic. Including recently asked questions, with answers, is an easy way to get needed information to the public. Foods columns are used on Wednesdays, along with other foods topics, in the Accent section of the paper. Another format that receives positive comments is featuring a seasonal vegetable or fruit, and providing a healthy and easy-to-prepare recipe.

Impact

The Index Journal printed 548 column inches of material that I submitted in 2004. News columns are a cost effective way of keeping Extension before our public. In addition, this is an avenue to remind people that information is available through xtension's Home and Garden Information Center.
