Master Gardeners Engineer a Restoration of the Railroad Historical Center's English Style Garden
| Name | James F. Hodges | | Situation | The Greenwood Railroad Historic Center was developed more than 30 years ago with a parked train and a well maintained one acre walking garden created and maintained by the Angelle Adams family. The Garden was a favorite of many visitors to the site. But as Adams aged, it became difficult to maintain the garden and many areas became overgrown with seven years of brush and vines. | | Response | Leaders trained through the Clemson Extension Service as Master Gardeners joined with the Greenwood Museum to renew the Garden. Master Gardeners have already spent four Saturdays to clean up and rediscover the Gardens.
More than 40 Master Gardeners have volunteered over 500 hours so far to the project. Two seminars were conducted on site by Extension agent James Hodges on clean up and pruning issues related to trees and shrubs common to the garden. Several additional volunteers who attended the seminars have joined the effort in clean up. | | Impact | The Garden is once again showing its beauty and attracting visitors each Saturday that the site is open to the public. A new sign to direct visitors has been added to the front of the Center and the train will reach its historic 100th birthday soon. The Railroad Historic Center highlights Greenwood's glowing past as a large railroad center and invites visitors to enjoy a very pleasant garden experience. More workdays will be required to finish the renovation of the garden, but much of the heavy lifting and cleanup has been completed. Some dead trees had to be removed so these areas will be redeveloped in the future to complement the current garden. Plans are to use the Garden area for other gatherings and events as appropriate for the community. |
