Vegetable Grower of The Year Awards Program
| Name | Stephen Odom | | Situation | Several years ago we were looking for a way to get our vegetable growers to improve the quality of the produce they offered for sale at the Greenwood Farmers Market. We developed a partnership with one of our local Rotary Clubs. The Clemson Extension service and the Emerald City Rotary Club sponors a Vegetable Grower of The Year Awards each year just prior to the market opening for the season. | | Response | The purpose of the program is to encourage growers to take pride in the quality of produce they offer for sale to the public at the Farmers Market. We have seen an increase in the quality of vegetables offered for sale and the number of growers has remained constant. | | Impact | This program has been good for the growers and for the buyers, because of the publicity that comes with it. Many growers have been able to sell a lot of their produce right at home. About 70% of our growers have learned how to better display their produce for sales. As a result, they get repeat customers. |
