Two New 4-H Youth programs for 2007 in Greenwood
| Name | James Hodges | | Situation | Without a county 4-H agent to coordinate youth programs in the county for the last 5 years, many programs weren't available because the lack of trained and certified volunteers. Volunteers can maximize the outreach of Extension programs to the public. | | Response | Working with interested parents, teachers and Master Gardeners, four new volunteers were trained and certified in 2007. Two new volunteers now lead the Ninety Six horse club, which has maintained its presence for many years despite the lack of an agent. Two volunteers were trained and certified in Shooting Sports and began the first Shooting Sports in March. A Master Gardener volunteer and teacher at Pinecrest Elementary
school worked with PTO to organize the first Junior Master Gardener class. Extension provided support for training the volunteers and instruction for some of the new Junior Master Gardener Class. The Shooting Sports volunteer was able to obtain a grant of $1000 for startup equipment and the PTO provided financial support for study materials for the Junior Master Gardeners. | | Impact | We have 6 new volunteers in 3 different youth programs in the county providing learning and eadership training opportunities for our youth. Nearly 20 youth participate in the horse club, with 8 involved in livestock projects. Sixteen youth are enrolled in the current shooting sports class with more on a waiting list. Ten new Junior Master Gardeners will complete their program this spring and 33 parents want to enroll in the next class. Our youth and parent interest level, participation and completion of youth programs continue to grow. Also, we have another trained Master Gardener working on a Junior Master Gardener class for next year at another school. |
