Greenwood Clemson Extension/Master Gardeners Mall Office
| Name | Stephen Odom, Jr. | | Situation | The Greenwood Clemson/Master Gardener Mall Office was established nine years ago to increase the visibility of the Cooperative Extension Service in Greenwood. It is also used to provide additional training to individuals who have taken the "Master Gardener" course. This is a partnership with the Greenwood Mall. The mall allows Extension to use the space for "free". Extension only has to pay a flat utility bill. | | Response | The Greenwood Extension/Master Gardener office is an asset to the Greenwood community. Many people find it convenient to stop in to get their questions answered about their lawns, gardens, shrubs, trees, and other problems while visiting the mall. Many more of our master gardeners have started to volunteer at the mall office. Six (6) new volunteers have been trained during 2007-2008 and are volunteering at the mall office. The master gardeners have taken interest in the decor office itself to help with keeping it presentable to the public. | | Impact | The arrangement has had a positive impact for the mall as well as for Extension. It brings more people into the mall and provides Extension with more visibility and opportunities to serve the public. We have seen a 10% increase in people bringing in soil samples and coming for other problems. Several of our older "master gardeners" have become more confident in their ability to help others with gardening problems by working with agents. They have learned how to research answers to questions from books online from varies Universities, etc. This allows agents more time to take care of other problems in the field. |
