4-H OKEE fifth grade program expansion

Name

Jason Caudill

Situation

After the success of the fourth grade program for OKEE, fifth grade teachers inquired about a program for their students. They felt left out and wanted to have access to hands on learning activities for their students as well. I thought that this would a good way of building on fourth graders’ experiences from the year before.

Response

I worked with Clemson staff to write and develop two fifth grade lesson plans on subjects that were not covered in previous fourth grade programs. We tried to key on as many fifth grade science standards as possible when designing the lessons. We chose the topics of soils and wildlife to center the lessons on and came up with some good activities to do with each lesson.

Impact

Fifth grade teachers have given positive feedback about having a continuation of the program for their students. They have also provided helpful criticism to help improve the program. I plan on meeting with the 5th grade teachers that participated near the end of the school year to do a focus group session in order to find ideas on how to make improvements. It is obvious that having a continuation of the program for fifth grade has completed the overall natural resource educational experience for Oconee students and has benefited their education.
