4-H Forestry

Situation

The 4-H Natural Resources specialist at Clemson University established a forestry competition based on the national 4-H Forestry Invitational model. Agents were given the opportunity to recruit students to participate in a state 4-H Forestry contest. This was to be the first year that the contest would be held in SC after a five year absence,so it was difficult to generate enough interest among youth in the county.

Response

I approached the agriculture education teacher at a local high school who teaches forestry and wildlife concepts in his classes and shared with him the information on the contest and encouraged him to participate. He assembled a group of students and he and I began working with them after school to prepare them for the competition that was to be held in late June. I also volunteered my knowledge and expertise to the Natural Resource Specialist to put together the state contest.

Impact

We held the state contest at the Piedmont Forestry Center in Salem in late June and the team from Oconee qualified to go to the National 4-H Forestry Invitational Contest held annually in West Virginia. I worked with the team on several other occasions preparing them for the National contest at the end of July. They competed and placed 10th out of 22 teams. I was extremely proud of SC's results in returning to this great contest. The students came back with a greater appreciation for the importance of forestry in their lives. They learned forest measurement and evaluation skills that can help them with future careers in forestry. The participants also improved their speaking and communication skills through the contest. It was a great learning experience for them and for me.
