Helping Hands 4-H Club

Name

Jason Caudill

Situation

Community 4-H clubs offer children opportunties to experience hands-on learning in many 4-H projects under the leadership of a caring adult. The Helping Hands 4-H Club is a community club in Oconee County that in the past has consisted mostly of home schooled kids. For the past year they have been without a consistent volunteer leader. One parent organized things and kept things going.

Response

As the agent, I researched volunteer training materials from the state 4-H office and actively started recruiting a volunteer leader. A new meeting time and location was determined so that the club could be open to more youth, not just home schooled youth. I conducted training on the duties of volunteers and how a 4-H meeting should be run. The group is now meeting once a month at West Oak High School in Westminster under the leadership of a trained volunteer leader.

Impact

Now the Helping Hands 4-H Club is growing and flourishing. The new leader has organized an email chain in order to keep everyone informed about club activities. She has also gotten the club to elect officers and has given those officers responsibilities in order to manage the club. They say the 4-H pledge at every meeting and at each meeting there are new members joining. They have grown to over 30 members now and the club has had success raising revenues to do activities.
