Farm City Days Event

Name

Jason Caudill

Situation

Due to school district travel constraints, we had not done a Farm City Days Event since 2004. The event traditionally was a two-day event in which K-3 students from all over the county would come to our Oak Grove 4-H Center, a farm donated to the Extension Office years ago, and go through exhibits which demonstrate aspects of agriculture and natural resources. This has been a partnership between Clemson Extension and West Oak High FFA in the past. The FFA members generally served as guides and labor to get things set up for the event. This has been a lot of work on our part in the past getting all of the exhibitors lined up for this event and trying to create the best experience for the participants.

Response

This year we wanted to renew the program and create stronger cooperative partnerships to help with the quality of the program. We were able to partner more closely with the West Oak FFA Chapter to help with this year's program. They arranged and put together over half of the exhibits for the program. We were able to get businesses to donate materials and equipment as in kind gifts to improve the experience for the participants. Another addition that we wanted to make was to offer county 4-Her's a chance to be a part of the program. I invited outstanding 4-H club members the chance to present.

Impact

This program reached and impacted over 600 youth participants from Oconee County. Teachers complimented the program and thanked us for organizing it for their students. The stronger partnership with the FFA students gave them an opportunity to practice their leadership and citizenship skills. We also had three 4-Hers who presented exhibits at the program. They excelled and really enhanced the experience for the participants. It also provided them with an opportunity to practice their speaking skills. The changes we made by creating a stronger partnership with West Oak FFA and offering county 4-Hers the opportunity to be a part of the program, really made this year's program unique and rewarding for the participants. We intend to continue this program next year and beyond.
