Natural Resource Education Website
| Name | Jason Caudill | | Situation | The agent has been developing natural resource education programs working with the schools since he started in this position July 2002. The agent developed a number of programs to offer as field trips for elementary students that fit the SC Science and Social Studies Standards. An efficient method was needed for publicizing information to teachers. Extension agents are fewer in number and are involved in numerous activities for more than one county. A website was developed to accommodate this need.
| | Response | The agent received training on how to build and maintain a website at a regional training for agents. He also read a tutorial that was obtained as well as learning the skill by experience. The agent created the website entitled, "Oconee Natural Resource Education Webpage". The lesson plans with correlating curriculum standards were transformed into PDF files and linked to the website. This was to give teachers a way to print them and show them to curriculum coordinators and principals to justify the value of field trips. The website also contained descriptions of other types of school programs that the agent offers along with many pictures. The website enabled teachers to find out specific details about what Extension programs are offered after having an initial visit or phone conversation with the agent.
| | Impact | The website has proven to be a wonderful marketing tool for the agent's programs. A counter has logged "166" visitors to the site just since mid-January. The agent has only informed teachers and administrators from the school district about the website. Five of the eight field trips conducted for schools this year were a result of teachers finding out about the program from the website. This website has increased Extension outreach to students through teachers by a factor of 3. This agent has also received phone calls about starting some natural resource education programs for the summer through the website. |
