Conference Summary

The Southeastern Title IX Drive-In Conference aims to create an opportunity for professionals, and others to engage in provocative discussions, make connections, share ideas, and learn from others throughout the southeast around Title IX issues.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX) prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. Title IX states, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.

Clemson University is excited about hosting the first annual conference on April 19, 2024, at the Clemson University Madren Center, 230 Madren Center Drive, Clemson, SC 29634.

Keynote Speaker

Matthew Hammett headshot

Dr. Matthew Hammett is a higher education administrator passionate about student development, leadership, and success. His career spans over 19 years and covers a variety of functional areas. Matthew is an expert in Title IX, notably in the fields of harassment, discrimination, and sexual misconduct. He is the inaugural executive director for the South Carolina Institute on the Prevention of Sexual Violence on College Campuses, chartered through Lander University. He most recently served as the director for civil rights, Title IX, and student risk assessment at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC. In addition, Matthew previously worked as the assistant dean of students/dean of the senior class and various roles in residence life education and career services.

He has extensive experience in student life areas and programs, including crisis management, conflict resolution, multicultural and social justice education, orientation, event coordination, leadership development, assessment, and conduct. In his most recent role as Title IX coordinator at Wofford, Matthew focused the college's efforts by increasing attention and awareness for sexual assault prevention.

Matthew holds a B.A. in mass communication and theatre from Lander University and an M.Ed. in counselor education from Clemson University. Recently, he successfully defended his dissertation titled “Self-Care and Institutional Support for the Title IX Administrator Through the Framework of Servant Leadership: Navigating Burnout During These Precarious Times in Higher Education.”

He will graduate from Converse University in May with an Ed.D. in professional leadership.

Personally, Matthew is an avid reader, marathoner, husband, and proud parent of two sons and a goldendoodle.
