Diane Perpich directs the new B.A. in Women’s Leadership. Housed in the College of Architecture, Arts, and Humanities, Women’s Leadership is an outgrowth of Clemson’s long-standing Women’s Studies program and offers students an innovative curriculum that combines academic study with practical experience to support the growth of women leaders ready to face new challenges with strength, resiliency, passion, and ethical awareness. Through internships, small research groups, and larger-scale classroom service learning projects, Women’s Leadership students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to take leadership on issues that matter to women and their communities.
During our presentation we will talk about the breadth of practical experiences gained by women in our program and its importance to leadership development, as well as discussing the challenges and successes of a recent project in which sixteen students in a large lecture class created a Campus Domestic Violence Awareness Campaign. Two students will join the discussion to talk about how service learning has impacted their understanding of issues of that impact women’s lives both locally and globally.

Presenters:
Diane Perpich is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Director of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Programs in the College of Architecture, Arts, and Humanities. She also directs the programs in Women’s Studies and Women’s Leadership. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and her teaching and research are in the areas of ethics and social theory. She is the author of The Ethics of Emmanuel Levinas (Standford 2008), which was awarded a Choice: Outstanding Academic Title of 2009 award. She has translated and edited several volumes, including most recently Taking French Feminism to the Streets: Fadela Amara and the Rise of Ni Putes Ni Soumises (University of Illinois Press, 2011).
Teylor Newsome is a Clemson sophomore majoring in English with a Writing and Publication Studies emphasis. She participated in the WS 3010 (Introduction to Women’s Studies) service learning project by working with a group creating a campus awareness campaign.

Clemson University Collaborations in Service-Learning is sponsored by the Clemson Service Alliance. The Service Alliance promotes the use of community service and service-learning by Clemson faculty in classes with both undergraduate and graduate students in all major disciplinary areas. The Collaborations radio webcasts are an opportunity to hear from some of our Clemson Service Alliance Faculty Fellows, their students, and their community partners about service-learning projects around the state of S.C., and to learn about the impact of these service-learning projects on the community and on student learning outcomes. In 2013-2014, we will be focusing on service –learning classes in five different disciplinary areas: Planning and Landscape Architecture, English, Languages, Teacher Education, and Nursing. Thank you for participating, and we hope that service-learning practitioners in both K-12 and higher education will find these workshops very helpful in the course development, implementation, and evaluation process. This program comes to you as a public service of Clemson University. There is no fee, and no registration is required.
