Sustaining Community Partnerships and Building Capacity

The A.Line.Ments Public Service Studio in Clemson’s Department of Landscape Architecture, winner of the SC Commission on Higher Education Service Learning Award in 2010, was established in 2006 to offer opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to engage in service-learning projects, to provide research opportunities for faculty and needed services to communities. The Studio has developed master plans and conducted projects for communities and organizations across South Carolina. Studio faculty also collaborate closely with the School of Architecture’s Community Research and Design Center.  This webcast will focus on how to build community partnerships and sustain those relationships over time in order to involve  and expose students to different phases and processes associated community and economic development efforts.

Mary Beth McCubbin

Mary Beth McCubbin, ASLA, LEED-AP, joined the Clemson landscape architecture faculty in the fall of 2005 and was appointed Director of External Projects and the a.LINE.ments Studio. Since its inception, the Studio has completed more than 35 community-based projects involving more than 300 students from a variety of disciplines. These projects focus on the impact of participatory design on community revitalization. The a.LINE.ments Studio was awarded the 2010 South Carolina Commission on Higher Education Service Learning Award.

Ms. McCubbin serves as a Service Learning Fellow for Clemson Service Alliance. She came to Clemson from Design Workshop (Vail and Denver offices) where she concentrated on community and resort planning. She holds a BFA, BLA, and MLA all from Penn State.

Paul Russell is an assistant professor in the Department of landscape architecture. Paul studied horticulture at the University of Tennessee and received a Master of Landscape architecture at Louisiana State University. With a focus on design implementation, Paul teaches construction for both the undergraduate and graduate level students as well as the Interdisciplinary Graduate Studio and  Undergraduate EXIT Studio. Paul is a principle at Pearson Russell Design Associates, a landscape architecture and design firm in Pendleton, SC.

Clemson Collaborations in Service-Learning Webcast

Clemson University Collaborations in Service-Learning is sponsored by the Clemson Service Alliance. The Service Alliance promotes the use of community service and service-learning by Clemson faculty in classes with both undergraduate and graduate students in all major disciplinary areas. The Collaborations radio webcasts are an opportunity to hear from some of our Clemson Service Alliance Faculty Fellows, their students, and their community partners about  service-learning projects around the state of S.C., and to learn about the impact of these service-learning projects on the community and on student learning outcomes.  In 2013-2014, we will be focusing on service –learning classes in five different disciplinary areas:  Planning and Landscape Architecture, English, Languages, Teacher Education, and Nursing. Thank you for participating, and we hope that service-learning practitioners in both K-12 and higher education will find these workshops very helpful in the course development, implementation, and evaluation process.
