Master Wildlife Program
| Name | Danny Howard | | Situation | Landowners, land managers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts were interested in learning how to integrate wildlife objectives into their land management considerations. Participants will learn how to implement management practices that will benefit major southern wildlife species. These were excellent introductory courses in how wildlife management is
practiced in the South. Greenville County's interest in wildlife management is increasing because of limited land availability and growth. | | Response | The Greenville County Extension Service offers this program for landowners and managers. Through the long distance education network, the program was conducted in Feb. and March. Extension's role is to educate landowners on the biology of wildlife species and how to implement best management techniques. Participants attended 8 seminars and one hands-on
field experience. Dr. Walt McPhail was the site coordinator volunteer and a master tree farmer and wildlife manager.
Speakers from other land grant universities, S.C. D.N.R., Clemson
University, National Wild Turkey Federation, and county agents, gave presentations on each species of wildlife, planting food plots, predator control, and economic impact to the state economy. | | Impact | Twenty landowners and managers completed the master wildlife program. 98% indicated they increased their knowledge of wildlife management. Sixty-one individuals adopted new practices. Because of the master tree farmer and master wildlife classes over the past four years, a Forestry and Wildlife Society educational group was created to continue the educational process. Forestry and wildlife impact on Greenville's economy is over 3 million due to timber harvest, land lease, purchase of agricultural equipment and supplies, tourism costs. 15 landowners have established recommended food plots for deer and turkey. New clientele was introduced to the Extension educational program through this program.
