3-A-Day June Dairy Campaign at Roper Mountain Science Center

Name

Elizabeth A. Hill

Situation

Children and adults need calcium in their diets to maintain healthy bones. Soft drinks and fruit drinks have replaced dairy drinks in the American diet. These beverages are full of calories, but of little nutritional value unless fortified as is the case with some fruit drinks.

Response

Working in partnership with the Southeast Dairy Association (SUDIA), registered dietician Dottie Ryan, the Extension Food Safety and Nutrition Educator helped to coordinate an event for families at Roper Mountain Science Center during their Second Saturday Series. Roper Mountain Science Center is an experiential learning center of the Greenville County School District. On the second Saturday of each month, the center is open to the general public to enjoy and explore their educational exhibits. In June of 2004, the Second Saturday was devoted to the 3-A-Day theme. Volunteers, Extension staff, and Roper Mountain Science staff members provided a variety of hands-on learning experiences such as milking a cow, making a fruit smoothie, a cheese bug and bone puppets. Families were invited to rest their bones awhile and view nutrition videos or talk to Mr. Bones, the puppet. Students were asked to sign a moo graffiti table sharing one thing they had learned about dairy products. There was a 3 - in - 3 contest for youth 9 to 12. They were asked to create a yogurt treat using three ingredients in just 3 minutes. Recipes and educational materials were provided by SUDIA. They also donated the door prizes and prizes for the 3 in 3 contest.

Impact

The Science Center was open from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Over 250 people attended the event. Some of the youth comments from the Moo Graffitti table: "There is more than one way to enjoy milk!" " I love chocolate milk." "Milking a cow takes a very long time." (manual milking) "Milk is udderly delictious." "Strawberry milk is great!" "Milk builds strong bones."
