Parents and Kids in the Kitchen; Organized Confusion!

Name

Elizabeth A. Hill

Situation

Children are introduced to high fat foods and empty calories at an early age as they participate in the fast food feeding frenzy called every day living as parents shuttle from here to there. The early years are formative years in many ways. When it comes to nutrition, these years will be the time when children will develop lifelong habits and preferences when it comes to eating. Health statistics for the state of South Carolina could be greatly improved if parents would help their children establish good eating habits early. The risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes can be reduced by preventive measures like eating healthy well balanced meals. Once introduced to burgers, nuggets, and fries, it is harder for parents to introduce healthy foods to the young child's diet.

Response

In partnership with the Family Learning Teams of Greenville County, programs were conducted for parents of young children where both the parent and child participate in food preparation in the Parents and Kids in the Kitchen classes. The focus of each class was to prepare three or four fun, creative, and tasty snacks for toddlers. In addition the agent talked about making ordinary snacks special using a little creativity. The agent also talked about how to introduce new foods in the diet and how to handle a picky eater.

Impact

Seven classes were taught at 6 child development centers in the county with 138 people participating. Ninety-seven percent of the parents reported an increase in knowledge.
