Business, Family Community Leaders, City of Orangeburg and 4-H Collaborate on Tree for Wildlife in Memory of Home Economist, Audrey Williams
| Name | Leigh Joyner | | Situation | In July of 2003, Orangeburg County Extension Service suffered the loss of home economist Audrey Williams. One of the most popular and well-attended of Audrey's educational programs was her annual Holiday House in which she taught holiday meal preparation and nutrition, as well as, decorating. In order to honor Audrey's memory and sustain the tradition of teaching high interest subject matter, the Orangeburg County Family Community Leaders developed, organized, hosted and implemented the 2003 Holiday House. Part of the educational program was appropriate decorations for an outdoor tree for wildlife. Orangeburg County 4-H was asked to be responsible for that part.
| | Response | Super Sod Trees donated an 8' Leyland Cypress Tree. Forty 4-H members from six clubs researched reading materials and made decorations that could be used for and that would be beneficial to wildlife. For example, crushed egg shell was mixed with bird seed and peanut butter for a healthy food mix. Ultra-lightweight thread was used so that wildlife would not get entangled in the decorations. Four-H members decorated the tree. After Holiday House, the tree was moved to the City of Orangeburg Edisto Gardens where it is planted with a plaque honoring Audrey and Clemson Extension Home Economics. | | Impact | As a result of this activity, FCL, Super Sod, the City of Orangeburg and 4-H completed a high-profile and meaningful collaboration. FCL was able to continue the tradition of teaching a popular topic. Four-H members learned about wildlife needs through a service-learning project.
Clemson Extension Home Economics is a permanent part of the Edisto Gardens.
