Curriculum Vitae


 

As the Director of Civic Design for the City of Charleston, Allen oversees the operations of the Planning Department’s Design Division and the Charleston Civic Design Center. He has two master’s degrees from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Urban Design and Community Planning and is a Certified Charrette Planner by the National Charrette Institute. Allen has been an urban designer with the City of Portland, Oregon, the Asheville Design Center, and the City of Wilmington, North Carolina. Allen is also an adjunct professor of urban design at the College of Charleston’s Community Planning, Policy and Design and the Clemson Architecture Center at Charleston’s of Resilient Design master’s degree programs. Allen has led various municipal urban design studios, charrettes and workshops in the creation of master plans, comprehensive plans, streetscape improvements, code amendments and site design studies and has a passion for the revitalization of postindustrial districts.
