John is from the small town of Columbus, IN; where he went to undergraduate school at University of Southern Indiana and earned a B.S. in Studio Art. He went on to graduate school at the University of Mississippi earning a M.F.A. in Studio Art with an emphasis in Ceramics. After graduate school he spent three years working as an artist assistant for Jun Kaneko, where he learned how to build extremely large-scale ceramic work. He has worked in and around Asheville, NC since 2019 as a working artist and an Adjunct Professor at UNC Asheville. John has immersed himself in atmospheric firing in the Western North Carolina area, building upon his prior experiences.
