Areas of Research

At the Cryovac Laboratory, our research is dedicated to tackling key challenges in food safety, extending product shelf life, and advancing sustainable packaging solutions. By integrating expertise in retort processing, shelf-life quality assessment, food product development, and biobased packaging, we aim to drive the development of next-generation technologies for the food industry.

We engage in advanced research on thermal processing methods for shelf-stable foods, prioritizing improvements in safety, quality, process/package development and energy efficiency. Our efforts support FDA-compliant process development, optimization, and validation across a variety of retort process, packaging formats and food products.

  • Key Areas of Research

Key areas of research include Retort Processing, with a focus on thermal process modeling and validation, retort technology across batch, continuous, and pilot-scale systems, microbiological stability and lethality assessment, energy and resource optimization in thermal operations, process automation and digitalization, along with shelf-stable food product/package development. We collaborate closely with industry partners to help bring safe, high-quality, and sustainable shelf-stable products to market efficiently.
