Allendale County Reestablishes County Advisory Board

Name

Karissa Ulmer

Situation

Allendale County Extension Office currently houses one full-time secretary and a 4-H Agent that splits her time with another county. It also utilizes a variety of other area Extension agents. Because agents are not housed in the county, it became critical that community members assist the Extension Service in priortizing critical needs and goals in relationship to the five Public Service ctivities (PSA) goal areas. The utilization of community members as volunteers in addressing the needs of their county is also important.

Response

Extension agents worked together to develop a diversified group of individuals to serve on a County Extension Advisory Committee to determine the needs of the county. This allows agents who are spread over several counties to focus their attention on the most critical needs of the citizens. Over 22 individuals were asked to participate in the first meeting. At the first meeting, guidelines were established that included term limitations, number of meetings, etc. Also approved were a job description and election of Chair and Vice-Chair.

Impact

Eighty-two percent of the individuals are continuing to participate in the committee. This group has divided into three action committees that include marketing and public relations, legislative advocacy, and research and program development. Each of these committees has selected a chairperson. These committees are scheduled to meet individually and continue to give valuable input to Extension programming. Through this committee, they have reinitiated the Farm-City Week committee and are planning a Kids Farm Days for county school children in the fall, as well as a Family Gardening Program for next spring. This committee has not only assisted the Allendale County Extension Office, but it is allowing citizens to come together to assist in addressing the needs of their county.
