Strawberry Production Update
| Name | David Parker | | Situation | Commercial strawberry production has become an important agricultural industry in upstate South Carolina. In an effort to provide the traditional researched based non-biased production information to strawberry producers, Clemson University, N.C. State University, and the University of Georgia have formed an alliance to share expertise. Extension specialists from each university are on call to producers in each of the three states.
Similarly, budget cuts have most County Extension agents working more than one county. Combining the factors of fewer Extension Specialists, fewer county agents, and fewer producers, it has become imperative to have area-wide commodity meetings for producers. | | Response | The Cherokee County Extension Office hosts an annual production meeting for strawberry growers in the Piedmont of S.C. The 2006 meeting was held on Feb.13 and was attended by 58 growers, with growers attending from Cherokee, Spartanburg, Greenville, York, and Chester counties of S.C., and
from Cleveland and Rutherford counties of N.C. Extension Specialists Dr. Barclay Poling (N.C. State University), Dr. Powell Smith (Clemson University), Mr. Wayne Mitchem (joint employee of Clemson, N.C. State and the University of Georgia), and David Parker, Cherokee County Extension Agent made presentations. | | Impact | Growers received the most current variety and production information from the above named presenters. In addition, over 50 producers received pesticide applicator's recertification credit. |
