Fruit Production Meetings

Name

David Parker

Situation

Commercial strawberry production has become an important agricultural industry in upstate SC. Likewise, commercial peach production continues to be a major enterprise. In an effort to provide the traditional researched-based non-biased production information to peach producers, Clemson University, N.C. State University, and the University of Georgia have formed an alliance to share expertise. Extension specialists from each university are on call to producers in each of the three states. Similarly, budget cuts have most county Extension agents working more than one county. Combining the factors of fewer Extension Specialists, fewer county agents, and fewer producers, it has become imperative to have area wide commodity meetings for producers.

Response

The Cherokee County Extension Office hosts an annual production meeting for strawberry growers in the Piedmont of SC. The 2007 meeting was held Jan. 24 and was attended by 70 growers, with growers attending from Cherokee, Spartanburg, Greenville, York, and Chester counties of SC., and from Cleveland and Rutherford counties of NC. Extension Specialist Dr. Barclay Poling (N.C. State University) was the keynote speaker. David Parker, Cherokee/Spartanburg County Extension agent presided. New area horticulture agent, Andy Rollins, was introduced. The Cherokee County Extension Office also hosts an annual peach production update. The 2007 meeting was held 2/20. Approximately 80 producers attended, representing Cherokee, Spartanburg, York, Chester, Greenville, and Anderson counties in SC, and Cleveland and Rutherford counties in NC. Drs. Dan Horton (UGA), Desmond Layne (Clemson), Guido Schnabel (Clemson) and Mr. Wayne Mitchem (joint appointment between Clemson, NCSU and UGA) made presentations. Andy Rollins was also introduced at this meeting.

Impact

Approximately 150 producers were given up-to-date production information, including updates on varieties, fertility, and weed, insect and disease control. Over 100 private applicators received recertification credits.>
